Tachilek is a small town on the Thai/Myanmar border. The town has a thriving market with a large number of stalls and shops specializing in wildlife trophies and medicinal products made from: Skins, bones and body parts of tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and several small cat species, deer, wild cattle, wild boar, primates and birds. Poached throughout the Indochina region, much of the produce bought here is smuggled across the border into Thailand.
Snake restaurants are clustered around the Le Mat district on the outskirts of Hanoi. It is illegal to serve wild caught snakes and most claim the snakes are farmed. In practice most are wild caught and kept captive for a short period before consumption. Venomous snakes are reputed to have more health giving properties but most snakes served up are harmless rat snakes while cobras are kept for display.
